It was a weekend for our less-heralded XIs, with wins for the 6s, 7s and 8s offsetting a largely disappointing set of results for our top five sides. There were plenty of individual highlights, though, with half-centuries for Frazer, Tashkoff, Sanbrook, Bailey, Petrie, Gopalakrishnan and Turrall, while Si Arnold claimed a superb five-fer for the 5s.

1st XI vs Flitwick

The 1st XI suffered their second defeat in as many weeks, losing a thriller to Flitwick as 50-over cricket returned for the final few weeks of the season. Batting first, we reached 256 all out from 44 overs, with the six unused overs ultimately proving costly. Ben Frazer (74), Jesse Tashkoff (58) and Andrew Neal (46) all made strong contributions, but none was quite able to go on and make the match-defining score.

Flitwick made a strong start to the chase and, at 190-3 after 37 overs, looked well placed needing 67 from the final 13 with seven wickets in hand. But the momentum swung back and forth, with Will Latham (3-39) taking key wickets to leave Flitwick needing 13 from the final two overs. Unfortunately, they held their nerve and got over the line with just three balls to spare.

Harpenden remain top of the table — albeit with very little margin for error over the closing weeks.

2nd XI vs Potters Bar 2s

A tough day on the Common for the 2s. Potters Bar posted 192 all out, with Joe Basquille (3-41), Guy Watts (3-42) and Sam Calladine (2-37) doing the damage with the ball. In reply, we never really recovered from slipping to 21-5. Toby Bell (40) and Sam Calladine (27) battled hard, but we were eventually dismissed for 118.

3rd XI vs Kings Langley 1s

Another difficult afternoon as Kings Langley posted 243 all out. Gareth Taylor (4-39) was the pick of the bowlers, fresh from his excellent spell for the 1st XI last weekend. Gareth then top-scored with 33, but we fell well short at 144 all out, with nearly 20 overs left unused.

4th XI vs Markyate

The 4s lost out in a top-of-the-table clash against Markyate despite posting a competitive total. Josh Sanbrook struck an excellent 66, with Will Pearson adding 33, as we reached 229 from our 40 overs. Markyate chased it down with just over two overs and four wickets to spare, despite two wickets apiece for Will Pearson (2-27) and Tom Cuppello (2-31).

5th XI vs Luton Town & Indians 4s

The 5s faced a tough assignment against second-placed Luton Town & Indians, who posted an imposing 273-8 from their 40 overs. The standout performance came from Si Arnold, who entered the attack fourth change and proceeded to rip through the batting with a brilliant 5-62 from seven overs. ??. Our reply started superbly with a century opening partnership, including Berwyn Petrie’s 51, but when both openers fell within three balls the momentum shifted. We battled on to 212-8, with Arnold completing an excellent all-round game with 31.

6th XI vs Wheathampstead 4s

At last, some good news!

The 6s came out on top in the local derby against Wheathampstead 4s after restricting Wheato to 128-8. All seven bowlers used kept things tight, but it was young Kit McGrandle making the headlines again, this time with the ball as he claimed 3-18.
There were a few wobbles in the chase, but Richard Bailey (54) and Greg Mitchell (48)* steadied the ship superbly as we raced home with five wickets and more than 16 overs to spare.

7th XI vs Chorleywood 4s

FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON FOR THE 7s!

Winning the toss and batting first proved an excellent decision as we piled up 261-8 from 40 overs. Raghul Gopalakrishnan led the way with a superb 70, backed up by Henry Barcock (43) and Ted Gurney (30). Chorleywood never quite got on top of the chase and were dismissed for 212, with Nick Abbott (3-47), Henry Barcock (2-23) and Emelia Murray (2-30) sharing the key wickets.

Brilliant to get that first win under the belt!

8th XI vs Knebworth Park 4s

And the 8s completed a hat-trick of wins for our lower XIs with an excellent victory over Knebworth Park 4s. We restricted Knebworth to 205-7 from their 40 overs, with Joey Haigney (3-28) and Ivo McGrandle (2-31) leading the way. In reply, we made short work of the chase, reaching the target in just 30.2 overs. Miles Turrall led the charge with an unbeaten half-century, well supported by Ivo McGrandle (35) and Alex Kilner (34).

So, not quite the weekend our top sides were hoping for, but three wins from the 6s, 7s and 8s, a first victory of the season for the 7s, seven half-centuries and a five-fer still gave us plenty to celebrate.
