The Huskies kicked off their season in style with an impressive away win against Redbourn on a lovely sunny evening on the common.

Losing the toss proved no setback, as Redbourn elected to field - we wanted to bat anyway!

The early stages of the innings had a slightly rusty feel, reminiscent of a “first day back after the summer holidays.” Calling and running between the wickets lacked fluency, and a variable wicket didn’t help matters. A series of self-inflicted run-outs, combined with a couple of deliveries that behaved unpredictably, saw the Huskies lose early wickets and stall momentum.

Enter Tamsin on her Huskies debut. Showing real composure and maturity, she steadied the innings superbly. Calmly assessing the conditions, she quickly took control of the Redbourn attack. Joined by Lily, the pair transformed the innings. Their partnership blended power and intelligence - strong boundary hitting, smart shot selection, and, crucially, much-improved communication between the wickets.

Tamsin reached a well-deserved half-century in style, launching a six over midwicket, while Lily played a superb unbeaten knock of 45, narrowly missing out on her own milestone on the final ball. Their innings may have differed in style and construction, but both were equally vital. Harpenden closed on an excellent 174/5, a total that always looked competitive.

With the ball, the Huskies were relentless from the outset. Amira set the tone with a genuinely quick opening spell that visibly unsettled the Redbourn top order, claiming two wickets in her opening overs. Olivia followed with a controlled spell, generating both drift and spin, and was unfortunate not to be rewarded with a wicket after repeatedly beating the bat.

At the other end, Isla delivered two excellent overs of disciplined bowling, picking up two wickets and maintaining pressure. Emelia rotated the attack effectively and made an immediate impact, finding the outside edge with the final ball of her first over—brilliantly taken by Hannah behind the stumps.

A special mention must go to Hannah, who stepped in as wicketkeeper and performed outstandingly. Brave, determined, and highly skilled, she contributed with key catches and run-outs, underlining the Huskies’ depth and resilience in the field.

Holly then produced a moment of real excitement, taking two wickets in her first two balls and coming agonisingly close to a hat-trick. Maya and Tamsin continued to tighten the screws, with Maya picking up a wicket as runs became increasingly hard to come by.

Although the final Redbourn pair showed some resistance, they were eventually run out, sealing a comprehensive 91-run victory for Harpenden.

This was an excellent start to the season. While we knew the team possessed a strong batting line-up, it was the depth and consistency of the bowling attack that stood out - applying pressure from the very first ball to the last. It can’t be fun batting against that attack!

That said, there are clear areas for improvement. Running and calling between the wickets must improve, and the number of extras conceded needs to come down - Redbourn’s total of 83 included 37 extras, technically making Harpenden the “top scorer” in their innings.

Before the match, the team focused on three principles: play brave, play smart, and be great teammates. Encouragingly, all three were evident in last nights game. The energy, atmosphere, and sense of togetherness were outstanding.
